This video is courtesy of Alex del Olmo @naucratesuw This short movie focuses on hard and soft corals in Raja Ampat during my season on board The Seven Seas Cruises. Each diver has its preferences. Some love big fish and pelagics, others turtles, some of them colorful nudibranchs. To me without any doubt my favorite subjects are corals. My heart is filled with happiness when I dive in a healthy reef in brisk current. It is more challenging to shoot them but you get the greatest reward: polyps broadly open and feeding, soft corals displaying their whole magnificent and colorful shape. Raja Ampat and Misool area are probably the best place in the world to witness this fascinating and unique ecosystem. Without coral reefs there would be no life on earth, and sadly they are threatened and its our duty to protect them. This video was shot in April 2021, during an assessment trip onboard The Seven Seas aiming to create a new MPA in Lucipara Islands in the Banda Sea and to follow up on the new MPA in Serua island which was created during our first Epic trip. At sea for a whole month, we traveled more than 1.000 nautical miles, diving in some very remote areas. The expedition started in Sorong and ended up in Labuan Bajo. During our adventure we dove in Raja Ampat, Pisang Islands, Ambon, Kaimana, Triton Bay, Komodo and Banda Sea. I was lucky to visit and dive for the first time in Tayandu and Lucipara, which will probably become new diving routes added to the classic ones. "With the Raja Ampat season approaching and the Seven Seas anchored in Labuan Bajo during the Covid lockdown, Captain Mark needed to move the boat to the eastern islands to be ready for guests joining the Raja Expeditions in December. As he plotted the course of more than 1,300 nautical miles through some of the most epic (and unexplored) islands of the Indonesian archipelago, he realized that in the midst of the challenges brought by the global pandemic, an opportunity had presented itself: ‘The thought of steaming back empty across the Banda Sea, with no guests onboard, and only to wait in Papua for Covid to end, was not particularly appealing. The Forgotten Islands aka Southeast Moluccas (Maluku Tenggara) covers an extensive area of eastern Indonesia of 1000 kilometers (more than 600 miles) of archipielagos from Timor to West Papua. Isolated and almost unpopulated area the “Forgotten Islands” have been isolated from Indonesia for a long time. The waters are crystal clear with a great visibility. Probably I found one of the most colorful coral reefs I ever seen with magnificent hard corals and soft corals as well, plenty of fish action. It is about 9:45 on our first morning aboard the Seven Seas. We were up at 6:00 and in the water for our first dive of the day at 7:30. It was spectacular. Beautiful coral and clouds of fish are all around. Everything from a Pygmy Seahorse the size of the nail on your little finger, to a school of Napoleon Wrasse and big grey reef sharks. We just had breakfast and will be going in for our second dive of the day in about an hour. We are off to a great start and first full day on board. On our third dive we saw majestic Manta Rays that were easily 12 feet across. After diving, we took a trip to Bat Island where a colony of fruit bats spent their day hanging in the trees sleeping. The island was packed with them. Their wingspan can be over a meter. Other than their wings, they look like little foxes. Right at sunset, they all headed out to feed on another island. Diving the Southern sites of Komodo National Park, and surrounding islands, has always been very exciting and unusual. Rocky canyons and pinnacles are heavily encrusted with marine invertebrate life, with lots of color and plenty of fish. Night diving without a doubt is one of the highlights here, lots of critters and far superior to any of the sites in the north. The only problem, during the "traditional" Komodo season from May through September, was that most of the time the water has been cold and murky and when you got back to the boat, your towel had been blown off the deck by the South easterlies. But we are now going to show you the south side as you have never seen it before, and during the time that you should be there, during the Northwest Monsoon! From October to May, this is the time of the year when it's all different and this is when the South is the Best! During the Northwest season, everything gets turned around and upside down in Komodo. This area ranges from the Eastern tip of Flores itself, in the West, to the Island of Wetar in the East of the Nusa Tenggara Timor island chain. Not only World Class muck diving at our new sites in Lembata and Pantar, not only the classical walls and coral reefs that made this area famous, but now also plenty of high voltage diving on rocky corners, islets and pinnacles along the Southern shores and in the straits between these islands. Highly diverse habitats, with hard coral dominated reefs, pinnacles and walls covered in combinations of hard and soft corals and other invertebrates, various types of sandy habitats (volcanic black, reef white), sea grass beds and even some blue water mangroves! Great fish life on some of the rocky pinnacles and promontories in the South as well as on some of the new reef and wall dives that we have explored in the North. Last but not least some of the very best cetacean diversity and abundance all around and right through this area which forms a migrating and feeding area for several great whales (notably sperm and blue whales) as well as a preferred habitat from many species of dolphins that occur here in staggering numbers. This area like no other lends itself beautifully for a day of whale watching, whether that is close inshore around the deep volcanic slopes in search of blue whales or out wide where the sperm whales are diving! East of Flores, September 2013 - An exploratory trip on board the Seven Seas along the Solor-Alor islands group in the northern Savu Sea. Here a quick 5-min impression of our fantastic time including exploratory dives, brilliant reefs under active volcanoes, local hand-lining for large yellow-fin tuna and close-ups of our speciality - oceanic cetaceans - with sightings of Fraser's dolphins, Risso's dolphins, spinner and spotted dolphins, bottlenosed dolphins, melonheaded whales, pilot whales, a blue whale (!) and of course...lots of sperm whales. One of the trip's many highlight: a jaw-to-jaw underwater encounter with a massive 16m bull sperm whale whom we named Timor Tom, after a rogue sperm whale who harrassed the 19th Century Yankee whalers in this area, Moby Dick style... Special appearance by our youngest crew member... Noah, who's almost 2 years old with plenty sea-time. He already decided he will not go to back to 'school' anymore, become a speedboat driver, enjoy the catch-of-the-day and explore the oceans! More than 1500 islands make up the Raja Ampat archipelago off the Bird’s Head of West Papua. These islands and their surrounding coral reefs support the richest tropical marine bio-diversity found anywhere in the world. The area includes 4.6 million hectares of diverse marine habitats and is home to more than 1,000 species of fish, 700 species of mollusks and some 540 species of hard corals (75% of the World total!).
